SUMMARY:TIARA - Saving the Stories III w Thomas M Toohey (In person and via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Ancestral Research Association is hosting Thomas Toohey as he presents Saving the Stories III. \nEvery month more more facts become available about our ancestors. These facts are like their skeletons. Family stories about them can add flesh to their bones and give life to their existence. In many families only one or two members remember these stories. These family members often assert that “someday” they will record the stories\, but unfortunately many don’t. When they pass away the stories are lost. \nMy Saving the Stories III presentation offers a method for telling family stories with pictures in an animated slideshow. It begins with two examples of my family stories. \nThe second part of the program gives a detailed explanation of how to make a slideshow by altering and animating images. It also explains how to add text boxes\, sound\, and media. Many family members would prefer watching a slideshow than reading a book. An interesting slideshow could be the highlight of a family reunion. \nThe program ends with a slideshow of a “Coming to America” story. These slideshows are designed to be entertaining as well as informative. \n  \nCheck back closer to the event for Registration Information

SUMMARY:MGC - Webinar - Secrets of My Vault: "What's in My Vault: Confessions of a DPW Engineer"
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Sara E. Campbell \nSecrets of My Vault:  “What’s in My Vault: Confessions of a DPW Engineer” \nThursday\, April 29\, 2024 at 7:00 PM ET via Zoom \nThis presentation is free but registration is required. Click here to register. \n\n\nTired of getting the cold shoulder from the Town Clerk when searching for genealogical records? It may be time to visit the Department of Public Works.  \n \nSara began her job in Greenfield City Hall in 2011\, and she soon lost herself in the DPW vault. Decades of original records were the domain of some of the city’s longest-serving employees. Organizing the records to make them more readily available before those individuals retired was one of her goals.  \nDo you know if your ancestors were municipal employees\, or served on boards or commissions? Mining annual reports of municipal departments and boards can yield valuable historic data. Understanding which records are preserved\, and who knows how  \n\n\nto find them is an important skill to develop. Your ancestors’ name may be found on all kinds of records relating to their home address. When did public utilities come to their neighborhood? How did that impact their lives? They may have had public works projects pass near their land or through it. \nThis presentation will explore potentially overlooked sources of information\, and the vulnerability of the records. \nThe discovery of Married Women’s Business Certificates on file with the City Clerk began her research of historic women’s businesses\, and the publication of her recent book\, “Did Grandma Have a Filling Station?” with her research partner\, Shari Strahan.
