SUMMARY:FGS - Genetic Genealogy\, Empathy\, and the NPE Community
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Genealogical Society Presents Talk with\nGenetic Genealogist Kate Penney Howard\nGenetic Genealogy\, Empathy\, and the NPE Community\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\, 10:00 am–12:00 pm \nFALMOUTH — The Falmouth Genealogical Society (FGS) will hold its monthly meeting on\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm in the Hermann Foundation Room of the\nFalmouth Public Library\, 300 Main Street. \nKate Penny Howard will present Genetic Genealogy\, Empathy\, and the NPE Community.\nShe describes ‘NPE’ as what happens when a person takes a consumer DNA test and\ndiscovers that their biological parent is ‘Not the Parent Expected’. Kate says that it’s often a\nshock for individuals\, and the discovery can trigger conflict and rejection in the family in which\nthey were raised as well as in their biological family. She will lead an exploration into the history\nand culture surrounding how we identify family\, and how consumer DNA testing has reframed\nthese concepts. She hopes that attendees will gain insight into the challenges faced by those\nexperiencing ‘NPE’ and develop empathy and practical skills for supporting individuals through\nthis often-turbulent journey of self-discovery. The talk aims to equip participants with the\nknowledge and sensitivity needed to approach genetic surprises with understanding and grace. \nKate Penney Howard is a genetic genealogist\, specializing in brick wall work\, HighRoH\, and\nendogamy. During a bout with cancer\, she discovered that she loves sharing her knowledge\nwith other genealogists. She is intentional about addressing injustice and myths in her\npresentations. Kate has presented at Rootstech\, East Coast Genetic Genealogy Conference\,\nthe International Congress on Medieval Studies\, NAAP/RTK’s Untangling Our Roots\, and the\nGeneral Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). 2025 speaking engagements\ninclude Rootstech\, Ohio Genealogical Society 2025\, and Ontario Ancestors Webinar Series\, as\nwell as local library and genealogical society gatherings. Kate studied vocal music and earned a\nMaster of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis in 2011 and has been\npastor of North Christian Church since her ordination in 2012. She will join FGS via Zoom. \nThis talk is free and open to the public. It is also available via Zoom. For the Zoom\ncredentials\, please contact fgspresident@gmail.com by February 7\, 2025.

SUMMARY:ACGS Webinar - Gene-ology: How We Understand Genetic Disorders Through Genealogy
DESCRIPTION:Gene-ology: How we Understand Genetic Disorders Through Genealogy combines fundamental concepts in genetics\, genealogical research methods\, and French-Canadian history to provide a comprehensive understanding of common French-Canadian genetic disorders. It examines how these disorders are passed down through generations and how they manifest in genealogical records. Attendees will learn about the patterns of inheritance and the significance of these conditions within the context of French-Canadian genealogy. The presentation will also provide a practical guide on how to use ACGS resources to uncover disease patterns within family histories. It will cover essential terminology associated with medicine and genetic disorders\, making it easier for participants to interpret both genealogical and medical records. Additionally\, the session will briefly discuss the value of modern genetic testing in genealogical research\, exploring how it complements traditional methods by offering deeper insights into hereditary conditions. It will also cover ethical considerations\, focusing on privacy and informed consent in genetic genealogy. \n\nJoin us on February 22\, 2025\, at 4 pm (ET)
