SUMMARY:The Falmouth and Cape Cod Genealogical Societies Present Two Talks
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth and Cape Cod Genealogical Societies Present Two Talks \nData Collection: Mastering Techniques in Genealogical Research \nBroad Context: How to Find It and Use It! with Jill Morelli\, CG \nSaturday\, November 15\,  2025\, 10:30 am–1:30 pm\nSt. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 421 Wianno Avenue\, Osterville \nThe Falmouth and Cape Cod Genealogical Societies will hold their annual joint meeting on Saturday\, November 15\, 2025\, from 10:30 am-1:30 pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 421 Wianno Avenue\, Osterville. \nJill Morelli\, CG\, CGL is a writer\, lecturer\, and co-founder of the Applied Genealogy Institute (Learn by Doing) and founder of the award winning (2) Certification Discussion Group that demystifies the BCG portfolio process by sharing techniques learned personally and from others. She lectures and has written articles for NGSQ\, The Sept and others. She is past president of Seattle Genealogical Society and is program director for the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. Jill Morelli\, CG will present two talks. \nData Collection: Mastering Techniques in Genealogical Research\nAs genealogists\, the foundation of our work lies in the careful collection and accurate interpretation of data. Ensuring that we follow best practices not only enhances the quality of our research but also upholds the ethical standards of our field. This presentation will provide you with the tools and techniques to manage and interpret genealogical data effectively and assure confidence in your response to tough genealogical problems. \nBroad Context: How to Find It and Use It! \nBy understanding the broad context of our geographic area and the era\, we can interpret the evidence more accurately and thereby understand the decision-making of our ancestors more clearly. We sometimes view context as just the historical events that affected our ancestor. We will broaden that definition and explain the difference between it and social history. Examples clarify meaning and illustrate how this is a project-long process rather than applied at the end.\n\nThese talks are free and open to the public. They are also available via Zoom.\nPre-registration is required for Zoom access: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/jZZv2cAqRy6uNeQrx0LBBw \nBag lunches will be available at a modest cost by pre-order only. Visit the FGS website at www.falgen.org for full program details\, Zoom registration instructions\, and lunch ordering information.

McClure\, Senior Genealogist\, American Ancestors\nSaturday\, August 9\, 2025\, 10:00 am–12:00 pm\nFalmouth Public Library\, 300 Main Street\, Falmouth \nFree talk. Open to the Public. Zoom Speaker. In-Person and Zoom. For the Zoom credential\, contact fgspresident@gmail.com no later than August 8. \nThe Falmouth Genealogical Society (FGS) will hold its monthly talk Saturday\, August 9\, 2025\, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm at the Falmouth Public Library\, 300 Main Street\, Falmouth. \nRhonda R. McClure\, Senior Genealogist with American Ancestors\, presenting via Zoom\, will discuss how descendancy research\, i.e. tracing all descendants of an individual to the present\, can help you further your research. Whether you are building out your ancestors’ network of extended family\, hoping to understand DNA connections\, working on a study project\, creating a family association\, or just want to connect with distant family\, this talk will provide the tools and strategies for finding living relations. \nRhonda McClure is a nationally recognized genealogist and lecturer. She is the editor of the recently released 6th edition of the Genealogist’s Handbook for New England Research. Her areas of expertise include: immigration and naturalization\, late 19th and early 20th Century urban research\, and New England and Mid-West research.

SUMMARY:FGS - If These Walls Could Talk: House Histories in Town and Country
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Genealogical Society Presents Talk:\nIf These Walls Could Talk: House Histories in Town and Country\nwith Jill Morelli\, CG\, CGL and Pam Pracser Anderson\, CG\nSaturday\, June 7\, 2025\, 10:00 am–12:00 pm\nOak Grove Cemetery\, 46 Jones Road\, Falmouth\, MA\n In-Person and Zoom. For the Zoom credential\, contact fgspresident@gmail.com no later than June 6th.\nThe Falmouth Genealogical Society (FGS) will hold its monthly talk and Annual Meeting on Saturday\, June 7\, 2025\, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm at Oak Grove Cemetery\, 46 Jones Road\, Falmouth\, MA. \nIf These Walls Could Talk: House Histories in Town and Country will be presented in person by Jill Morelli\, CG\, CGL and Pam Pracser Anderson\, CG \nDid you ever wonder about the people who lived in your house—or an ancestor’s home? Whether it’s a farmhouse nestled in the countryside or a house on a city block\, every house has a story to tell. This presentation explores how to research the history of a house using both urban and rural examples. We will look at a city house’s evolution over time through maps\, deeds\, city directories\, and building permits\, then contrast that with a long-held farm property\, focusing on land transfers\, tax records\, censuses\, and newspapers. Both case studies highlight the kinds of questions to ask and the types of records that reveal how a property and its families changed over time. Special attention will be given to resources and repositories relevant to Massachusetts researchers\, though the strategies can be applied anywhere. Whether exploring your ancestors’ houses or your own\, you will leave with a clear sense of how to begin—or deepen—your own house history research. And she loves returning to the Falmouth Genealogical Society for the 11th year! \nPam Pracser Anderson is a Certified Genealogist and owner of Anderson CoGen in Franklin County\, Pennsylvania. She began researching her family history in 2010\, beginning with one of the original settlers of Owego and Tioga Counties in New York. Pam lectures on various genealogy topics and has written articles for the NGSQ\, NYG&B Record\, and Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly among others. She received the NGS Award of Merit for the Certification Discussion Group’s Mentorship Program that support individuals pursing genealogy certification.

SUMMARY:FGS - Genetic Genealogy\, Empathy\, and the NPE Community
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Genealogical Society Presents Talk with\nGenetic Genealogist Kate Penney Howard\nGenetic Genealogy\, Empathy\, and the NPE Community\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\, 10:00 am–12:00 pm \nFALMOUTH — The Falmouth Genealogical Society (FGS) will hold its monthly meeting on\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm in the Hermann Foundation Room of the\nFalmouth Public Library\, 300 Main Street. \nKate Penny Howard will present Genetic Genealogy\, Empathy\, and the NPE Community.\nShe describes ‘NPE’ as what happens when a person takes a consumer DNA test and\ndiscovers that their biological parent is ‘Not the Parent Expected’. Kate says that it’s often a\nshock for individuals\, and the discovery can trigger conflict and rejection in the family in which\nthey were raised as well as in their biological family. She will lead an exploration into the history\nand culture surrounding how we identify family\, and how consumer DNA testing has reframed\nthese concepts. She hopes that attendees will gain insight into the challenges faced by those\nexperiencing ‘NPE’ and develop empathy and practical skills for supporting individuals through\nthis often-turbulent journey of self-discovery. The talk aims to equip participants with the\nknowledge and sensitivity needed to approach genetic surprises with understanding and grace. \nKate Penney Howard is a genetic genealogist\, specializing in brick wall work\, HighRoH\, and\nendogamy. During a bout with cancer\, she discovered that she loves sharing her knowledge\nwith other genealogists. She is intentional about addressing injustice and myths in her\npresentations. Kate has presented at Rootstech\, East Coast Genetic Genealogy Conference\,\nthe International Congress on Medieval Studies\, NAAP/RTK’s Untangling Our Roots\, and the\nGeneral Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). 2025 speaking engagements\ninclude Rootstech\, Ohio Genealogical Society 2025\, and Ontario Ancestors Webinar Series\, as\nwell as local library and genealogical society gatherings. Kate studied vocal music and earned a\nMaster of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis in 2011 and has been\npastor of North Christian Church since her ordination in 2012. She will join FGS via Zoom. \nThis talk is free and open to the public. It is also available via Zoom. For the Zoom\ncredentials\, please contact fgspresident@gmail.com by February 7\, 2025.

SUMMARY:NHSOG - Fall Conference with Blaine Bettinger
DESCRIPTION:Blaine Bettinger “The Genetic Genealogist” Will be the Featured Speaker at our Fall Conference \nSaturday 19 October 2024\, 9:30–3:00 at the Puritan Backroom Conference Center\, in Manchester\, N.H. \nBlaine will give three presentations: \n\n\nUnderstanding the DNA Testing Company Websites and Tools — Together we will explore the genetic genealogy company offerings\, including the tools and analyses offered by the testing companies themselves. This will help us determine which tests and tools are best for our particular research question. \n\n\nUsing Autosomal DNA for 18th and 19th Century Mysteries — Even though our 18th and 19th century ancestors have been dead for decades\, their DNA still survives in their descendants. Learn how to use autosomal DNA to attack and potentially solve genealogical mysteries and brick walls for ancestors who were born or lived in the 1800’s\, 1700’s\, and beyond. \n\n\nUsing Artificial Intelligence Tools for Genealogy —  Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is a valuable new tool for genealogists\, potentially saving 100s of hours a year and offering new ways to organize our research. However\, these tools have important limitations that must be understood in order to utilize them properly and efficiently. We will cover the benefits and limitations of generative AI\, and how you can explore this entirely new field without becoming overwhelmed! \n\n\n \nTickets are for sale today\, $70/in-person\, $50 remote. SUMMARY:ACGS - Summer Webinar
DESCRIPTION:ACGS is thrilled to be working with Paula Grandpre Wood\nfor the Summer 2024 Virtual Webinar!\nPaula Grandpre Wood’s presentation will be\nWhat I Learned About the Ceinture Flechee and My Ancestral Heritage\n  \n\nPaula’s book invites readers to walk in the steps of real people with real joys and terrible heartache as they make the fateful decision to leave behind everything they knew in La Rochelle France and begin life anew in New France. After serving indentureships\, they began families\, and some of her ancestors were caught up in the Acadian Dispersal. In the more recent past her ancestors immigrated once again\, this time to the U.S. Through genealogical research of Paula’s ancestors that was gifted to her by a family member\, she learned the bare facts of the many generations of her forbears’ lives. One day these ancestors began speaking to her heart. She responded by delving into the broader story of the times they lived through. She began writing a series of letters to specific grandparents\, asking them unanswerable questions and telling them how she longed to know them better. \nHer family’s Ceinture Fléchée (Arrow Sash) has been passed down through six generations. The Sash binds the various parts of Paula’s story into a coherent whole. Undertaking a quest to bring the family’s heirloom to each ancestor’s grave\, she discovered one ancestor after the next. With each discovery\, she wrapped the tombstones with the family’s Sash. While learning and then writing about her 9x grandparents she walked the Long Trail in Vermont\, discovering parts of herself she had never known existed. Along with her growing sense of closeness with these ancestors\, she found her way back to the Catholic Church. Every step of her journey\, she knew her ancestors were praying for her. \n\nJoin us on August 10\,  2024 at 4 pm (ET)\n  \nTo Register please Click Here: Webinar Registration\nDeadline to Register is August 3\, 2024

Learn some new techniques for figuring out where how these individuals connect with you. (Focus is on Ancestry.com results system). \n  \nPaula Williams\, “Summon Your Inner Sherlock Holmes”\n \nPaula is a professional genealogist who has been researching for more than two decades in primarily Southern US states and has been using DNA to solve problems for more than a decade. In addition\, she’s a board member of the Virginia Genealogical Society and of the Genealogical Research Institute of Virginia (GRIVA) and is the facilitator for the latter’s DNA Special Interest Group. She has taught at the IGHR and GRIP institutes and has lectured for the Southern California Genealogical Society’s Genealogy Jamboree and for the National Genealogical Society conference\, among others. \nSummon Your Inner Sherlock Holmes \nGenealogy research is often seen as detective work\, especially when it comes to identifying and evaluating our DNA matches. We’ll explore some of Sherlock Holmes’s philosophies and apply them to our DNA analysis. \n  \nDebbie Wilson Smyth\, “DNA Doesn’t Lie\, But Needs Help to Find the Truth!” \nDebbie Wilson Smyth has been researching her family since 1993 and holds a Certificate in the Genealogical Research program from Boston University. As the owner of Oak Trails Genealogy Services\, LLC\, she provides professional genealogical services in research\, education\, consultation\, and speaking. Her research focuses on Midwestern and Southern states\, methodology\, lineage society applications\, and DNA. Debbie is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Genealogy Speakers Guild\, as well as a number of national\, state\, and local societies. \nDNA Doesn’t Lie\, But Needs Help to Find the Truth! \nDNA testing is a valuable tool for use in genealogical research. DNA provides confirmation of a genetic relationship; however\, it requires the help of documentary research to confirm the genealogical relationship. This presentation reviews the differences between a genetic relationship and a genealogical relationship and demonstrates how pairing the two will strengthen your genealogical conclusions. \n  \nSchedule of Events\nSaturday\, May 18th\, 2024\nAgenda \n11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. \nSara Cochran\, “My DNA Brought Me to the Forest\, but Where Are All the Trees?” \n12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. \nPaula Williams\, “Summon Your Inner Sherlock Holmes” \n1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. \nDebbie Wilson Smyth\, “DNA Doesn’t Lie\, But Needs Help to Find the Truth!” \nClick here to Register today – Registration closes May 11th.

SUMMARY:MGC - Webinar - Secrets of My Vault: "What's in My Vault: Confessions of a DPW Engineer"
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Sara E. Campbell \nSecrets of My Vault:  “What’s in My Vault: Confessions of a DPW Engineer” \nThursday\, April 29\, 2024 at 7:00 PM ET via Zoom \nThis presentation is free but registration is required. Click here to register. \n\n\nTired of getting the cold shoulder from the Town Clerk when searching for genealogical records? It may be time to visit the Department of Public Works.  \n \nSara began her job in Greenfield City Hall in 2011\, and she soon lost herself in the DPW vault. Decades of original records were the domain of some of the city’s longest-serving employees. Organizing the records to make them more readily available before those individuals retired was one of her goals.  \nDo you know if your ancestors were municipal employees\, or served on boards or commissions? Mining annual reports of municipal departments and boards can yield valuable historic data. Understanding which records are preserved\, and who knows how  \n\n\nto find them is an important skill to develop. Your ancestors’ name may be found on all kinds of records relating to their home address. When did public utilities come to their neighborhood? How did that impact their lives? They may have had public works projects pass near their land or through it. \nThis presentation will explore potentially overlooked sources of information\, and the vulnerability of the records. \nThe discovery of Married Women’s Business Certificates on file with the City Clerk began her research of historic women’s businesses\, and the publication of her recent book\, “Did Grandma Have a Filling Station?” with her research partner\, Shari Strahan.
