Powell\nSaturday\, June 6\, 2026\, 10:00 am–12:00 pm\nFalmouth Public Library\, 300 Main Street\, Falmouth \nThe Falmouth Genealogical Society (FGS) will hold its monthly talk Saturday\, June 6\, 2026\, from 10:00 am-12:00pm at the Falmouth Public Library\, 300 Main Street\, Falmouth. The FGS Annual Meeting will precede the talk. \nDavid Powell will present in person\, and his talk will be centered on using lineage society websites to research one’s ancestor’s military service in the Revolutionary War. Specifically\, he will discuss the Patriot Research System (PRS) operated by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. This database includes the Patriot Search\, Member Search\, Descendant Search\, and Cemetery Search features. He will also discuss the online resources of the Daughters of the American Revolution Genealogical Research system including Ancestor Search\, Descendant’s Database and the GRC. In addition\, Powell will briefly discuss the resources of the Society of the Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge and the use of the Valley Forge Park Alliance Muster Roll Project. \nDavid Powell served four years as the Syracuse\, NY Chapter President followed by four years as a Vice President and then two years as State President of the Empire State (NY) Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He is currently one of the Vice Presidents of the SAR in Massachusetts. He was also the New York Brigade Commander of the Society of the Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge and is currently the Interim Brigade Commander of the New England Brigade. David is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR)\, the Sons of the Revolution (SR)\, The Sons of American Colonists\, The Sons and Daughters of Colonial Militia Officers (1775-1783) and the General Society of the War of 1812. \nPowell retired from working for 41 years in the forensic field. He began his genealogical research in 1991. He has been a presenter across the United States on Revolutionary War and genealogy topics such as the pension system and its records\, the money used during the Revolution\, the Defense of Fort Mifflin and the use of DNA for Genealogy. \nThis talk is free and open to the public. However\, the advent of DNA testing may be just the thing to help you over this obstacle. Join Irish genetic genealogist Claire Bradley as she explains how to use the valuable clues in your DNA results and how to marry them with modern Irish genealogical records. \nClaire Bradley is a professional Irish genealogist working with both paper records and genetic genealogy. For Americans\, the word brings to mind the occupying army that attempted to crush the Revolutionary War. There was more to these soldiers than their red uniforms\, but the individuals who formed the ranks are seldom described in any detail in historical literature\, leaving unanswered questions. Who were these men? Why did they join the army? Where did they go when the war was over? \nIn Noble Volunteers: The British Soldiers Who Fought the American Revolution\, Don N. Hagist brings life to these soldiers\, describing the training\, experiences\, and outcomes of British soldiers who fought during the Revolution. Drawing on thousands of military records and other primary sources in British\, American\, and Canadian archives\, and the writings of dozens of officers and soldiers\, Noble Volunteers shows how a peacetime army responded to the onset of war\, how professional soldiers adapted quickly and effectively to become tactically dominant\, and what became of the thousands of career soldiers once the war was over. \nHagist dispels long-held myths\, revealing how remarkably diverse British soldiers were. They represented a variety of ages\, nationalities\, and socioeconomic backgrounds\, and many had joined the army as a peacetime career\, only to find themselves fighting a war on another continent in often brutal conditions. Against the sweeping backdrop of the war\, Hagist directs his focus on the small picture\, illuminating the moments in an individual soldier’s life — those hours spent nursing a fever while standing sentry in the bitter cold\, or writing a letter to a wife back home. What emerges from these vignettes is the understanding that while these were “common” soldiers\, each soldier was completely unique\, for\, as Hagist writes\, “There was no ‘typical’ British soldier.” \nDon N. Hagist is managing editor of Journal of the American Revolution (allthingsliberty.com). His historical studies focus on presenting an accurate picture of individual soldiers and their families\, especially those of the British army who served in America. This research is done using exclusively primary sources\, mostly from archives in North America and Europe. He was a consultant for the PBS documentary The American Revolution produced by Ken Burns and the Netflix series Turning Point: The American Experiment. He has written several recent books including Noble Volunteers: The British Soldiers who fought the American Revolution\, The Revolution’s Last Men: The Soldiers behind the Photographs and the forthcoming Invisible Lives: British Soldiers’ Wives in the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:The Art of Self-Editing for Genealogists\nPresented by Pam Anderson\, CG® \nProgram Description\n“The Art of Self-Editing for Genealogists” focuses on editing genealogical manuscripts. Elizabeth Shown Mills first wrote in Evidence! Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian\, 1997\, “Effective source citation is an art\, not a science. No formula can cover all situations.” The same applies to the skill of self-editing\, which must be honed. This presentation begins with assessing our genealogical writing as a whole\, progressing to paragraph development and organization\, then to sentence structure\, and finally to word choice\, using Evidence Explained and The Chicago Manual of Style as our guides. \nAbout the Speaker\nPam Anderson\, CG®\, is the owner of Anderson CoGen in Franklin County\, Pennsylvania. She used her master’s degree in Speech Pathology until changing careers in 1991\, becoming owner of Anderson Construction until 2016. She began studying her family history in 2010\, went professional in 2014\, and obtained her CG credential in 2018. Pam mentored ProGen 47 in 2020-2021 and GenProof 95 in 2025 and has taught various courses on The Art of Self-Editing for Genealogists since 2023. Her articles have appeared in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly\, National Genealogical Society Quarterly and Magazine\, The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record\, Maryland Genealogical Society Journal\, and Utah Genealogical Society Crossroads.
