SUMMARY:Cape Cod Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Ray Sears\, “Using LearnForeverLearn to Examine Your Family Tree for Endogamy and Pedigree Collapse.” \nRay Sears has been studying his family history since 1976 and along with his Mom and sisters has documented most of his ancestors to the 9th generation.\nCape Cod ancestors in the 17th and 18th century were part of an endogamous community where cousins married cousins. This makes traditional use of autosomalDNA very difficult. Using the LearnForeverLearn tool a genealogist can easily visualize pedigree collapse by allowing the tool to analyze a GEDCOM of a person’s ancestors and possibly find a way to sort out all those autosomalDNA matches you have.\nPlease register for all events. Members will receive an email with instructions on how to register as we get closer to the event. Non-members are asked to email us at info@capecodgenealogy.org to receive a registration link.

SUMMARY:Central Massachusetts Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Carol McCoy\, Ph.D.\, “The Maine-Canada-Ireland Connection: Seeking Rogers’ Roots.” The event is free for members\, and non-members are welcome with a $2 donation. \nThis enlightening case takes the listener through the extensive search for the supposed Scottish roots and parentage of James C. Rogers of Brewer\, Maine. Ultimately\, we learn that the Rogers were not from Scotland\, but were early Irish emigrants to Nova Scotia\, Canada. The case reinforces the importance of testing data\, seeking primary evidence\, and using a wide range of sources to solve genealogical problems. You will learn ways to overcome false assumptions\, use vital records\, censuses\, deeds\, probate\, court records\, newspapers\, cemetery records\, Internet family trees\, and online resources to discover an ancestor’s migration route and parentage. \nCarol Prescott McCoy\, Ph.D.\, is owner of Find-Your-Roots\, based in Brunswick\, Maine. She lectures\, conducts research\, writes about family history\, and coaches aspiring genealogists\, specializing in New England\, New York\, and West Virginia. McCoy grew up in Bronxville\, New York and lived for many years in New York City. Seeing the error of her ways\, she moved to Maine in 1991. She received her A.B. from Connecticut College and her Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Carol is a past president of the Maine Genealogical Society\, where she served on the Board of Directors for many years\, and where she served as president of the Greater Portland Chapter. She has presented genealogy workshops and lectures at NERGC Conference from 2009 to 2021\, Boston University Certificate Program (early years onsite class)\, University of Southern Maine\, and at many other places throughout New England. SUMMARY:Meeting of the Connecticut Ancestry Society
DESCRIPTION:“Here Comes The 1950 U.S. Census! What To Expect\,” presentation by Joel Weintraub. \nThe U.S. 1950 census will become public on April 1\, 2022. Joel will prepare us for its debut by covering what is a census\, who uses the census\, census caveats\, how the 1950 census was taken\, training of enumerators\, enumerator instruction manuals\, census sampling\, 1950 population and housing forms\, census questions\, post enumeration codes\, 1950 undercount\, and a summary of the results. Joel will conclude with a discussion on his and Steve Morse’s 1950 census locational tools\, online right now at the stevemorse.org website. Those 1950 utilities took almost 8 years to produce with the help of under 70 volunteers\, involve 230\,000 or so searchable 1950 census district definitions with about 79\,000 more small community names added\, and street indexes for over 2\,400 1950 urban areas that correlate with 1950 census district numbers. \nJoel Weintraub\, a New Yorker by birth\, is an emeritus Biology Professor at California State University\, Fullerton. He became interested in genealogy over 20 years ago\, and volunteered for 9 years at the National Archives in southern California. Joel helped produce location tools for the 1900 through 1950 federal censuses\, and the NY State censuses for NYC (1905\, 1915\, 1925) for the Steve Morse “One-Step” website. He has published articles on the U.S. census and the 72-year rule\, the name change belief and finding difficult passenger records at Ellis Island\, and searching NYC census records with the problems of NYC geography. He has a YouTube channel that has his genealogy (and biology) talks at “JDW Talks”. \nThe program is a CAS member benefit. All those whose memberships are current will be sent the ZOOM link to the event via email. The society’s membership year is June 1st to May 31st.

SUMMARY:Meeting of the Polish Genealogical Society of Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:“Polish Christmas Customs\, Wigilia\, and Opłatek\,” presentation by Sophie Hodorowicz Knab. \nPlease join us for program that is just in time for the holiday season! The sharing of the opłatek (Christmas wafer) on Christmas Eve is the most cherished of all Polish Christmas customs. On the eve of Christ’s birth\, the people of Poland and their descendants scattered all over the world\, gather together at the table where they are about to share the evening meal\, and first offer each other a thin piece of unleavened bread called opłatek. This presentation will discuss some of the historical origins and symbolism associated with the unleavened bread called opłatek. \nSophie Hodorowicz Knab immigrated to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1954. She grew in a Polish American community\, learning how to speak English and becoming American in all ways but her Polish parents also instilled within her all the traditions and customs of their native land of Poland. As an adult\, she cherishes her heritage and is always willing to share what she knows with others. She is a noted lecturer and author whose books include Polish Customs\, Traditions and Folklore; Polish Country Cottage Cookbook; and her most recent release is titled Polish Herbs\, Flowers and Folk Medicine. She is a contributor to the Polish American Journal and the Am-Pol Eagle.

SUMMARY:Meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston
DESCRIPTION:“What You Need to Know About Jewish Family Names\,” presentation by Sally Amdur Sack. \nWhile identifying family names is basic to doing genealogical research\,\nJewish family names are anything but simple. Different rules governed the\nadoption of names in different countries and in Ashkenasic and Sephardic\ncommunities. Some names were chosen\, others were assigned\, and some\nwere evaded to avoid harsh consequences. They vary in origins\, meanings\nand can have multiple spellings and grammatical forms. Names can reflect\nempires\, border changes and emigration. Rabbinic lines have special\nfeatures. Understanding Jewish naming practices can illuminate the\ninformation you gather and extend your family tree by generations. \nSallyann Amdur Sack is a pioneer and international leader in modern Jewish genealogy. She served as president of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS)\, led seven annual IAJGS conferences and was honored with the IAJGS Lifetime Achievement Award. She co-founded and chaired the International Institute for Jewish Genealogy in Jerusalem. She is the long-time editor of AVOTAYNU: The International Review of Jewish Genealogy\, and has written several major reference books on Jewish genealogy. She is currently working on the IAJGS Documentation of Jewish Records Worldwide Project\, which she co-founded. Dr. Sack has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from George Washington University and a B.A. from Radcliffe College at Harvard. \nPlease visit the event website to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston
DESCRIPTION:“New York Jews in the Immigrant City\, 1880-1924\,” presentation by Daniel Soyer \nBetween the 1870s and the 1920s\, almost 2\,500\,000 Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States with most of them settling in New York City. While New York shaped the contours of Jewish life both in the city and in the rest of the country\, Jews also profoundly influenced the culture\, politics\, and economics of the city and beyond. In this talk\, Daniel Soyer examines Jewish immigrant life by looking at the city’s immigrant Jewish neighborhoods\, communal organizations\, politics\, cultural expressions\, economic activities\, and relations with other segments of the population. \nDaniel Soyer\, professor of History at Fordham University\, is especially interested in American Jewish life in New York. Two of his books developed out of this interest\, and he has won both the National Jewish Book Award and the American Jewish Historical Society’s Sau Viener Award. In addition\, he is coeditor of the journal American Jewish History. Daniel Soyer last spoke to the JGSGB in 2014 on Landsmanshaftn. \nPlease visit the event website to register for this event.
