DESCRIPTION:“Polish Christmas Customs\, Wigilia\, and Opłatek\,” presentation by Sophie Hodorowicz Knab. \nPlease join us for program that is just in time for the holiday season! The sharing of the opłatek (Christmas wafer) on Christmas Eve is the most cherished of all Polish Christmas customs.  On the eve of Christ’s birth\, the people of Poland and their descendants scattered all over the world\, gather together at the table where they are about to share the evening meal\, and first offer each other a thin piece of unleavened bread called opłatek. This presentation will discuss some of the historical origins and symbolism associated with the unleavened bread called opłatek. \nSophie Hodorowicz Knab immigrated to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1954. She grew in a Polish American community\, learning how to speak English and becoming American in all ways but her Polish parents also instilled within her all the traditions and customs of their native land of Poland. As an adult\, she cherishes her heritage and is always willing to share what she knows with others. She is a noted lecturer and author whose books include Polish Customs\, Traditions and Folklore; Polish Country Cottage Cookbook; and her most recent release is titled Polish Herbs\, Flowers and Folk Medicine. She is a contributor to the Polish American Journal and the Am-Pol Eagle.

Different rules governed the\nadoption of names in different countries and in Ashkenasic and Sephardic\ncommunities. Some names were chosen\, others were assigned\, and some\nwere evaded to avoid harsh consequences. They vary in origins\, meanings\nand can have multiple spellings and grammatical forms. Names can reflect\nempires\, border changes and emigration. Rabbinic lines have special\nfeatures. Understanding Jewish naming practices can illuminate the\ninformation you gather and extend your family tree by generations. \nSallyann Amdur Sack is a pioneer and international leader in modern Jewish genealogy. She served as president of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS)\, led seven annual IAJGS conferences and was honored with the IAJGS Lifetime Achievement Award. She co-founded and chaired the International Institute for Jewish Genealogy in Jerusalem. She is the long-time editor of AVOTAYNU: The International Review of Jewish Genealogy\, and has written several major reference books on Jewish genealogy. She is currently working on the IAJGS Documentation of Jewish Records Worldwide Project\, which she co-founded. DESCRIPTION:“New York Jews in the Immigrant City\, 1880-1924\,” presentation by Daniel Soyer \nBetween the 1870s and the 1920s\, almost 2\,500\,000 Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States with most of them settling in New York City. While New York shaped the contours of Jewish life both in the city and in the rest of the country\, Jews also profoundly influenced the culture\, politics\, and economics of the city and beyond. In this talk\, Daniel Soyer examines Jewish immigrant life by looking at the city’s immigrant Jewish neighborhoods\, communal organizations\, politics\, cultural expressions\, economic activities\, and relations with other segments of the population. \nDaniel Soyer\, professor of History at Fordham University\, is especially interested in American Jewish life in New York. Two of his books developed out of this interest\, and he has won both the National Jewish Book Award and the American Jewish Historical Society’s Sau Viener Award. This lecture will demonstrate ways to build a map using Sanborn Fire insurance maps\, census records\, and city directories in Google Maps. \nAri Wilkins\, a graduate of Louisiana State University\, has been actively researching family history since 1998. Ms. Wilkins has spoken nationally at the National Genealogical Society\, Federation of Genealogical Societies\, Texas State Genealogical Society\, Ohio Genealogical Society\, Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research\, Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy\, American Library Association\, RootsTech\, and a multitude of local societies.   \nAri has been a Library Associate at Dallas Public Library since 2007.
